A loud crack from a lightning strike rang in his ears and illuminated the hood. Giving proof he was totally fkd, steam and smoke poured from the cracks in the hood. Pulling his hood up from his jacket, popped the hood of the car. Using his phone’s flashlight confirmed, the smoke was abating; no actual fire. Diving back in the car, drying off his phone to call for help, he watched helplessly as the bright flashlight and remaining power in the battery shrunk into nothingness.
His choices, sit here until someone happens by, or do as he always does and get the job done. He thought he saw a house about a half mile back
The air was thick with a damp, earthy scent; he could almost taste it. Trudging on, getting soaked to the bone, he finally rounds a bend and, through a veil of rain, a jagged silhouette challenging against the flashing in the sky, a grand, yet early, silent, and dark old Victorian house.
Clenching his jaw and mounting the stairs to the porch, he finally had a small reprieve from the pelting rain. The house wasn’t in as bad of shape as he thought; it looked well cared for, but there weren’t any lights. Nothing. The house and surroundings are eerily inky black.
